BERGENIA CILIATA (CILIR – A REMEDY FOR H.PYLORI)

INTRODUCTION

Herbal medicines are being used by about 80% of the world population primarily in the developing countries for primary health care. Time has proved their safety, efficacy, cultural acceptability and lesser side effects.Bergenia ciliata is one of the important medicinal plants It is distributed in the temperate Himalaya (from Kashmir to Nepal) from 2000 to 2700 m and is very common in Pakistan and Central and East Asia.

Scientific Classification

Kingdom : Plantae

Division : Magnoliophyta

Class : Magnoliopsida

Family : Saxifragaceae

Genus : Bergenia

Species : ciliata

Part used for Viral Activity: Roots

Phytochemicals and active Constituents of Bergenia Ciliata

  • Bergenin

Bergenin is the principle constituent of the well-known medicinal plant Saxifraga ligulata. Bergenin has anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antiviral, immune stimulant, antihyper glycemic, and antioxidant properties.

The root of this plant has a high reputation in indigenous systems of medicine for dissolving stones in the kidney and as antiviral especially for H.pylori.

  • Alkaloids

The alkaloids are substances of a very diverse class of plant secondary metabolites; an extensive list of biological activities has been attributed to alkaloids, such as being ant cholinergic, antitumor, diuretic, antiviral, antihypertensive, antiulcer, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory

  • Amino Acids

In humans, amino acids participate in various physiological processes, such as skeletal muscle function, atrophic conditions, sarcopenia, and cancer. They play key roles in cell signaling, homeostasis, gene expression, synthesis of hormones, phosphorylation of proteins and also possess antioxidant abilities

  • Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the main energy source in body. Digestive system convert carbohydrate to glucose which use for energy in organs, cells

  • Glycosides

glycosides showed significant antioxidant activity, anticancer and antitumor activity, hepatoprotective activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-diabetes activity, antiviral activity, antibacterial and antifungal activity, and other biological effects

  • Phenolics

Antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of phenolic compounds, which is known to exert preventive activity against infectious and degenerative diseases, inflammation and allergies via antioxidant, antimicrobial and proteins/enzymes ..

  • Steroids

The main benefits to the patient are to decrease pain and increase function

  • Tanins

Tannins have also been reported to exert other physiological effects, such as to accelerate blood clotting, reduce blood pressure, decrease the serum lipid level, produce liver necrosis, and modulate immunoresponses.

  • Galic acids

Gallic acid seems to have anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. Gallic acid acts as an antioxidant and helps to protect our cells against oxidative damage. Gallic acid was found to show cytotoxicity against cancer cells, without harming healthy cells.

  • Terpenoids

Analgesic effect as well as anti-inflammatory effect.

Uses of Homeopathic mother tincture of Bergenia Ciliata

  • Anti Ulcer

The studies shows that the antiulcer activity appears to be mediated via cytoprotective effects conferred by enhancement of the mucosal barrier, rather than by prevention of gastric.Bergenia ciliata is used for the treatment of stomach

disorders in the folk medicine of some areas of South East acid secretion or the lowering   of pH and acidity.

  • Anti Oxidant

Antioxidants are found to play important role in protecting DNA from various ROS mediated damages and may be useful in the treatment of human diseases where oxygen free-radical production is particularly implicated. Extracts of bergenia ciliate is reported for DNA protection and protective nature is attributed to the presence of antioxidant components, glycosides and phenolics are powerful antioxidants active ingredients of bergenia ciliata

  • Anti Inflammatory

Alkaloids, glycodsides and terpenoids are also role play as anti inflammatory in human so bergenia is potentent with them

  • Anti tussive

It is used against fever, cough and pulmonary infections. The extract of bergenia ciliata of the rhizome of Bergenia ciliata is used as an antitussive due to the presence of chemical constituents like(steroids, flavonoids, tannins) for cold and cough by the local people of the Sikkim and Darjeeling districts of West Bengal, India.

  • Anti neoplastic activities

Antineoplastic: Acting to prevent, inhibit or halt the development of a neoplasm (a tumor). An agent with antineoplastic properties.Galic acid, amino acids and alkaloids are chemical constitution of Bergenia ciliata and they play role as anti neoplastic activites

  • Gastro intestinal disorders

Bergen is major constituent of rhizomes of bergenia ciliata possessing anti.H.pylori activity and provide scientific link to its traditional anti-ulcer use.

  • Anti viral

Bergenia ciliata acts strongly as antiviral, because due to the presence of glycosides and galic acids. It is use for reducing the viral load and also use as hepatoprotective.

  • Kidney stones

phenolic compound produced highest dissolution of both calcium oxalate &phosphate           stones .It is effective in renal parenchymal, degenerative changes in glomeruli and focal calcification in glomerulo-tubular structures

  • Anti Bacterial

Bergenia ciliata root extract was found to inhibit the growth of gram positive bacteria as compare to gram negative strain

  • Anti fungal

Antifungal activity evaluation of the leaves and root extracts of Bergenia ciliata can be  delineated as follows. The antifungal activity of roots and leaves extract were effective against Microsporum canis, Pleuroetus oustreatus, and Candida albicans.
